Security Awareness Training (SAT) has proved to be a powerful tool to combat cyber threats of the day given that majority of the threats target human weaknesses. Organizations that are conducting SAT are reaping benefits of detecting the adversaries before they compromise. Despite the good news, the senior managers are exempting themselves from the training which introduces a new risk to the organization.
The adversary of the day is focused, skilled and their intent is to reap maximum benefit from their attack. The executive is a good target for them as they well know they have access to vast data and resources and can enable the attacker gain access to what they are interested in. Secondly if the target is an executive there is a high percentage a quick background check can give out cues needed to launch attack– That’s a gold mine. Their profiles can be accessed on Social Media platforms – Linkedln, Facebook etc or a recent magazine interview which can give lead to their personal life which are good clues to an attacker.
Senior managers need to be part of SAT, not just because they are a target but also to set the tone right for the organization. SAT for senior managers should be specialized to bring into perspective the threats the organization face and secondly their ‘executive’ role of leading by example. The second aspect plays a major role as decisions made from the top have more impact and will trickle down the importance of SAT.
